Is there ever a science behind massage? Well, the thing about massage is that its a blanket term. Think about how different Thai massage with their stretching in comparison to Chinese massage with acupressure. Like almost every professio, massage came from people experimenting and finding out something that worked for them and offered it as a service. Scientists then discussed techniques and theories why massage is effective. But in reality, what drove the progress of m assage isn't from the understanding of science but from traditional experim entation. Science behind m assage is onlu a retrospective view. Especially that only later have we had a chance to use a cadaver to study the human body without too much social backlash. Scary back ground. But dentists would have had a scarier prehistoric beginnings too. The good news is that massage now is full of clinically effective and well researched concepts and techniques that takes our aches away and bring us backto life, almost. Remedial massage and Myotherapy are the modern age massage. But really, they could not have ever existed without an eccentric vilage shaman finding out pressing someone's shoulder takes their pain away.
So is there science behind it? How and why it works? Yes. Why we do it in the order that we do? The century late village shaman did it that way.
